The most important reason for studying English and Language Arts is to love God and our neighbor. We must be able to understand others and be understood by them to be in relationship with them. It is through these relationships that we are able to know, love, and serve God and build the Kingdom of Heaven. Written language instruction emphasizes the need for clarity and beauty. The study of written works emphasizes the ability to see beyond the message of the author/poet to the transcendental themes. Additionally, studying great works of literature helps us contemplate God’s love for man; man’s responses to God, other men, and nature; and the discernment of God’s will for our lives.
